Auto or manual??? If it's your automatic that is stiff(which is common)it is the shifter assembly its self. I've found the best thing to do is remove the heatsheild under the car. Disconnect the cable. Drill a very small hole in the housing for the shifter assembly(just the size of the lubricant hose)and squirt the hell out of it through the hole with some WD-40 or PB blaster. Go in the car and work the lever back and forth a few times then repeat the squirting. When it's nice a free clean around the hole really well with some brake cleaner or alcohol and put a dab of silicone over the hole(not in it) to close it up.

Do you get this condition only in cold weather? If yes, there is a post on this website that explains how a different lube mixture will cure that ill. My Tour grew up in Buffalo, and it was a real "stick in the mud" in the Winter.

Especially first gear! They say it's like trying to shift through peanut butter...

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Its the the plastic piviot joints in the shift linkage itself. I took the linkage off and worked it back and forth while adding spray silicone to the joint, but its still tight.
