Here is a great deal on the BR-1 from PE. Its a pretty easy way to get into the speaker building hobby, and you can't beat the price. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-640 I have read reviews that compare it to monitors in the 250-500.00 range.

Audax/Polydax makes great, inexpensive drivers.
both of my home two-ways use Audax 1" silk dome tweets with Madisound 6.5" woofers. i love the sound. the ported system get solid bass in the 30's and the smaller sealed system drops off in the 50's
my other two-way uses the smaller .75" cloth tweet with a 5.25" Madisound driver. ported, I get decent bass down into the 80's
all three pair probably cost a total of $450 for parts. and they sound better than most "popular" systems, IMO.
