Assuming I can find a Ford CD unit, would this be easy? This is for my computer illeterate friend who doesn't want to spend money but wants CD. He has a '97 Contour with the non-premium system. Or does it even have the CD input on the '97? Anyone know? Thanks.

Go buy a 3 year old used bottom of the line Alpine HU for $30. It will both sound better and not be a steaming pile of absolute ****. The Contour's factory HU is the ****tiest thing I have ever heard in my life. I have seen Ladas with better stereos. Seriously that HU is so ****ty it smells like gay ass mad

another inexpensive option is to go get a new low end pioneer, they pack in a lot of features for the price, i consider them pretty nice cd players for 120 bucks

Well if it were my car I'd get new speakers first because his sound like the paper has torn. But since he doesn't seem to care I figured I could at least talk him into getting a cheap Ford CD player from a salvage yard and install it for fun. But, if it's not do-able forget it. I just don't know if it has the hookup or not and what cables I need.

To install the CD player you would need the factory ****tty amplifier since the CD player has none. Thus creating installation fun (actually not really much fun) and it will sound marginally less like absolute ****ing ****. But hey, he would have the ability to play CDs. Well at least until the CD player remembers it is a factory Ford CD player and eats the CD or even better starts on fire killing everybody in the car. **** those stereos are ****ing garbage. Tell your friend to go buy a wind up radio and tape it to the dash, it will sound better!

Oh, ok. Well I don't want to mess with an amp so nevermind. Thanks for the quick reply. You're right it probably would break or at the very least catch on fire.

If it's a non-premium sound system there is no amp to bypass is you want I have a set of instructions from Crutchfield for the HU install. And like mentioned go with a newwer cheaper Pioneer, I've heard a lot of good things about them. (I'm a Kenwood Freak Myself).

You can spend an additional $8-$10 dollars to get the wiring harness that way you won't have to cut any of you stock wires. WHich is cool that way if he goes to sell or trade in the car it'll take him less than 10 minutes to put the old head unit back in.

Here are the Crutchfield Master Sheets

As you can tell by the sheets it's not that hard at all especially with the wiring harness.

I just wanted to add that your not going to get an oem cd player cheap anyways, so you might as well tell your friend to buy an aftermarket HU.
