Hey guys ran a search for a couple diffrent keywords and did not come up with anything (engine wire harness, return, returnless, engine harness).

I ahve a 98 SVT that i just pulled the motor on and the 3L is almost built and on the engine stand.

The small harness that goes on top of the engine has not been replaced and the insulation is in BAD condition. NOW: I have a great condition harness from a late 99 contour se lying around. Now i know they had returnless so there is an extra plug for the pressure transducer. From the wiring schematics ive found, the only diffrence is this sensor taps ref power and ground from the TPS and has 1 extra wire to the PCM. Now if this is the only change.....

can this harness be swaped with the return system on my contour? or is there some change I overlooked?

Also, Ive read many articles about having to drill and tap for the knock sensor. but im still not understanding why and where. Can someone link me to picturres/a good article?

The injector clips are different on a late '99 to '00 Contour, so the answer is no, you can't use that harness UNLESS you swap to lateer style injectors with the matching electronic clip. I think I still have a picture of those injector changes somewhere... Earlier style are rectangle and the later style are oval...

hummmmmm, I don't have the one showing the differences loaded to my site any more, but here are the early style connectors which are rectangle. The newer returnless ones are oval...



The knock sensor is located on the firewall side of the block. The sensor has a hole in it that a bolt passes through in order to mount to the block. The newer style blocks and sensors have a smaller hole than the older style block/sensor does, so you would have to drill/tap a newer 3L block to accept the older/larger bolt and sensor. You should do it this way rather than change the knock sensor to the newer type to avoid wiring problems and any calibration differences in the sensor itself.

The LIM that the harness came off of was dated 8/99 and was DEFINATLY returnless. THe harness has the squarish connector *came connector as my 99 24lb injectors. So technically, it should work....right?

Also the 99 contour SE lim is bigger than the 98 SVT LIM right? I think i read somewhere that the 99.5-2000 got the same larger lim that the svt had.

Some of the '99 Cougar got the larger LIM, but not any Contour SE's that I know of. My '99 SE had the small LIM... well, stock anways...
