I was wondering if anyone could help me... I have a 98 svt contour. It is stock and has ~93000 miles. Recently, the car has been losing power on the high end (after 4000 rpm). It doesn't sputter....it just doesn't have the power that it should (ie it doesn't pull to the redline with tenacity). I brought the car to the dealership and they did a tune up, replaced fuel filters, and recent replace the ICV (the car started to idle poorly). These things fixed the idle trouble and the power loss for a while, but the power loss has returned. I should also mention that this doesn't always happen. Sometimes the car runs fine and has plenty of power. The dealership doesn't seem to know what to do since no codes show up and they just did the tune up. Anyone have any ideas???
Also, the car revs when the AC/defroster is on. Any ideas why this happens? I believe that it should lose power when the pulley is engaged.....not surge with power.
Thanks

I would like to stress that I am by no mean an SVT expert- but it could be a fried (or otherwise inoperable) IMRC unit. These have been a problem for the V6 contour from what I understand, and a symptom of their failure is a loss of power at high RPM.
Regards, Matt

I also suggest looking at the IRMC unit. it has a multi-strand cable in it that goes bad. as strands of the cable break, they get caught in the housing. you can check for this by removing the imrc cover and looking under the circuit board. be careful not to damage the circuit board connections.
contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!

I had this problem in 2002 right after the stealship did a recall repair. My symtoms were exactly as you describe. They kinked the IMRC cable. It was replaced for no charge (after I made a very public stink in their service department). They tried to claim that it was just worn out until I showed them the very obvious kink and incorrect routing of the cable.

Great dealership that can't even diagnose an IMRC issue.

How common are secondaries anyway? I hadn't heard of them before getting my Contour.

Sounds like your fuel pump is going out. Does occur more frequently when you have a quarter tank of gas or less? Does it buck?
