So I bought a 99 Contour 4cyl (105K for $1900, it looks maintained) Monday. Friday I took it for a 100 mile spin. It now makes a new sound which is grinding-ish on the outside and sounds like water waves on the inside of the car. I really don't think its water making the sound though.

I do beleive it is coming from something along the serpentine belt path. Anybody have a clue ? Maybe I'll post an MP3 tommorrow. The sound is present from when you start the car to when you turn it off and it does speed up and slow down as the engine revs. Otherwise the car works as it should.

Also what is up with the valve covers? Are they made of freaking plastic or something? Theres a groove worn into it from one of the cables in the engine ????

Maybe your car is just responding with as much love as you show it?

Maybe you don't know how to treat it like a real car...

Your problem is with the OIAA

ONCE AGAIN...

SOME people are too agressive, and SHOULDN'T be... now for those that DON'T KNOW...

He made a post and wasn't helpful in his question.. and people jumped him... I instructed him to perhaps change his attitude and post a question on his noises, and people would help him... I also stated that certain people were out of line for being so aggressive towards him, as well.

So, what did he do? He posted a clear, concisely stated question about something he has wrong.. and what did we (as a group) do, AGAIN? jump him... people can change, you know.. they just end up not wanting to because they get the same response either way... SHAPE UP GROUP (those not involved not included... you know who you are..)
linky for info

As for your problems.. Does the sound seem to increase, or change either positively or negatively when you turn the wheels, speed up, slow down, put it in neutral, etc? What can be done to affect the sound at all?

Wheel bearings make a whirring, slightly whoosing sound, as well as maybe bearings on the tensioners, etc..

Let us know what you can do to CHANGE the noise and we can further diagnose your problem..

ok s-o-r-r-y
as for the sound...might be something to do with the power steering, maybe a loose vacume hose in that region.

and no the vavle covers are not made of plastic...that grove is just from the cables rubbing over the metal thousands of times...put some foam or something soft over the cable where it rubs for a quick fix

Does it make the sound at idle.. or only when its moving, or both? If it make the sound ALL the time, then its engine related... only when moving, bearing. I would guess it s a bearing ina pulley if its the engine. Nothing major or needing to worry about. Could be the A/C clutch making the noise, too. Those tend to make that noise as the go bad. And no... the A/C doesn't have to be on for the clutch oin the compressor pulley to make the noise, either.

Edit:
