actually, the contours stock alternator is 130, yes 130 amps. thats HUGE.
in fact, i think i remember hearing that other than police interceptors who have a slightly upgraded alternator, its the biggest ford produces. i believe it has something to do with mass production, and for sharing many parts, for example contour alternators with trucks, etc.
one possibility is that the alternator is performing fine, but the battery wires, such as the 12 v and the ground, are not able to transfer the current to the battery quickly enough. upgrading those would be definitely cheaper, and may fix everything
but no, i have 1000 watts peak and my lights only dim if i pump up the volume for some heavy bass, if you wanted a cap, though, it couldnt hurt, i personally just dont have one
