I have a problem with my trans that I'm hoping someone can help me with -- I have a '98 Contour SE-V6 with a 5spd stick. I was sitting in traffic this morning when all of a sudden I went to shift into first gear and there was almost no resistance. I could move the stick from 1st to 2nd gear, but not to 3rd, 4th and 5th. It was almost as though the other gears didnt' exist. Also, there wasn't any of what I would call "resistance" when moving the stick from 1st to 2nd gear -- I couldn't feel that "notchiness" that you usually feel when you're shifting gears. I can't figure this out since it just happend all of a sudden -- I wasn't even moving when this happend. I haven't heard any grinding, vibrations, or other problems before this that would have led me to believe there was a problem coming.
In any event, I had to leave my car somewhere and wanted to see if I could get some feedback on this. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is it possible that is' just a cable or something under the boot? I looked really quickly but didn't see anything loose.
