Do the yellow top optima batteries really make a difference if you have a big sound system in your car. I have two amps in my car....one for the lows and one for the highs. On moderately high volumes, my amp for the highs goes out and comes back and just cycles like that until i turn it down. My friend suggested that I get a yellow top optima battery. Will this help?

Adding a battery to the rear of the car will almost always be an improvement. However your high amp cuting our sounds like it could be "clip" related. If both amps power come from the same source and only one shuts off I would look other then power problems. A quick check with a voltmeter would answer both questions:
(1. Do you need a second battery and 2. Is the second amp cutting out due to low voltage)
It could be as simple as a loose ground to the high amp.

Yellow top batteries are Deep cycle batteries, and are designed to have a high amp out put for longer periods of time, and will recover from a dead cycle (as apposed to a red top, which will not recover well from 0 CCA'a) Also conisder moving up to an 80Amp alternator. it's not too expensive, but it is custom, and you might have a hard time finding one for the contour

Moving up to a 80 amp alternator? The stock contour alternator is rated at 135 amps.
If you truly need more than that, search for the threads regarding the PA Alternator, 200 amp IIRC.

also, iirc, none of the optima batteries like to be completely discharged, be it yellow or red top.

I believe he meant 180 amp. That's the HO one I got thru the GB (not 200 amp.)

Thank you RG I did mean 180, I'm not a typist. 200 amps is kind of overkill, 135 just isn't enough for lots of aplications, and 180 seems just right

135 is more than enough for multi-thousand watt systems...
To need more would require some very very serious systems.
