Yah, all this RIAA crap just kinda died after Napster/Kazaa finally bit the dust the first time around (kazaa is back from what I see)
Im behind 2 physical firewalls and a redundant server - I highly doubt someone can log my IP at my home computer when Im illegally downloading my 3 songs a year....seriously..I havent downloaded a song this year just because as of right now

the ip address given to you by the isp is trackable and the person whose name is on that contract is the one taking the risk. for examle: if you have internet because of your dorm or apartment or something then who ever is legally responsible for that is at risk. that is exaclty why i gave my roommate a choice when the law suits started...stop downloading music/movies or i will cancel the internet and you can get it in your name.

ok except its usually the ones that are uploading or hosting that are getting in trouble, not the downloaders! Way to fall victim to their scare tactics!

i should point out that my decision was heavy influenced by his loser friends whom i found unsavory. i knew the risk was low but still too high considering i did not and do not trust them in any way.

The IP given to me is dynamic, not static meaning it changes every time the computer resets. All I have to do is reset my server/router/firewall and it will change.
Plus I have IP and Port scanning software and I often get alerts from spyware - but not a single one from the RIAA trying to hunt my 3 songed ass down and slaughter me with a 1,000034323438%*$(%)*$ dollar law suit.
Scare tactics work on most people though, nice try.
I actually had been risking my neck by running a bootleg copy of HL2 with CS:S - but after playing it for about a month, I just had to give credit to Valve and I bought the Gold Edition - $79.95. Who says having illegal stuff wont influence you to buy the real thing. I had no intention of buying it until I played the full version - now I cant wait to play it through again.

Stealing is stealing.
RIAA is a business just like any other. They want to make as much money as it can.
If you like the music, buy it.

Okay, do you really think that your ISP does not keep records of the IP they have assigned you? If you think they just magically forget it every time you are reassigned an IP by DHCP, you are very mistaken. They keep plenty and plenty of logs, you'd probably be scared if you knew the amount of random data that is collected.
But the RIAA doesn't really bug people that don't upload, so all that 'port scanning' software is really unnecessary. Run a good software firewall and/or be behind a hardware firewall/router and you should be fine.

I totally agree!
Norton Internet Security + XP SP2 Firewall + WRT54G ROUTER = Safe enough to download all the time and upload occasionally.

csvt985, you missed my point entirely. i am not employing scare tactics but rather i am simply pointing out a false sense of security you are enjoying. over two- short posts i explained my reasoning for my decision which was heavily influenced by a group of people i know are untrust worthy and have unlimited access to and use of my roommates computer. i was not stating that three songs are going to result in a fine.
btw, my ip from sbc dsl is also dynamic and i almost always have the same one. soooooo...
also, i have not made nor am i now making any judgement concerning illegal music downloads other than i choose not to accept the risk however small.
