I have a 2000 Ford Contour. About a week after I got the car it died going down the road and had about 1/4 of a tank of gas. It did it several times after. Then it died when it had about 1/2 tank. As long as I had over 1/2 tank of gas in it, it ran fine. Then about 5 weeks ago the CEL came on and it starting running BAD!! I took it to the shop and they said the Cam Sensor was bad, so they replaced it. After it was shut off and started again the CEL came back on. I had the oil/filter changed and a two way fuel system cleaner ran thru it. I drove it for about 5oo miles or so with the CEL on. Now it does not want to start. When the light came on, the car went, but was hesitant about wanting to go. There is a faint noise coming from the engine when it is reved up. Can anyone help??? PLEASE!!! I have only had the car for 6 months!

You should go to Autozone or somewhere to get the codes read and then post them here. That would help. From what you are saying though, it sounds like the fuel pump to me....or the filter. I assume since you posted "cam sensor" in the singular that this is a Zetec. Describe the noise.

When I took it to the shop after the CEL came on, he hooked it up to a machine and it said the Cam Shaft Sensor was bad. I am not sure what the code was. I do know it said the Cam Shaft. He replaced it. When the code was reset the car ran fine until it was turned off and turned back on. I can go to Autozone Tuesday to find out the code for it. The noise is kind of a rattling sound. My husband says that it sounds like it is coming from the intake manifold.

I tried to get the car to Auto Zone to get the code read again and the car won't go. It will start, idle real rough and then die. Then it will not start back up. After it has set awhile it will start and do the same thing. Where is the Fuel Pump and the Fuel Filter located? Is it hard to change out?

Can the Fuel Pump or Filter make the Cam Sensor mess up?

Check the wiring to the cam sensor i had one that gave me trouble and the entire time it was the wire that was shorting out as the heat from the engine had melted the insulation. Mine was a 96 and teh the wiring harness was the same type as the fuel injector plug. Good luck

this is a long shot, but was it by chance raining when the tour stalled? i ask this because mine did the same thing and stalled in the rain because water was driping inbetween the hood and air cowl and into the camshaft sensor wire(wire was torn and insulation was worn away) in front of the fire wall...it sent up a cel for the camshaft sensor...stalled every rain storm
also...an unsignificant detail in mine, the tank was 1/2 and 1/4 full when it stalled~~turned out to not be important

IIRC, the reason the code reset only after the engine was turned off and restarted, is becasue the cam sensor is only used by the PCM to figure out when #1 piston is on the compression stroke when cranking the engine. (Without the cam postion sensor, when #1 cylinder comes up on TDC, the PCM can't tell if #1 is on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke, so it doesn't know which fuel injector to fire - #1's or its companion cylinder (half way down the firing order). With no cam postion sensor signal, some PCMs try firing the injectors at random to see if it can by chance fire the correct injector and get it to start.

So it sounds like your PCM is not getting a good cam position sensor signal and is therefor setting a code and lighting the MIL lamp. (Just becasuse the PCM is not receiving a cam postion sensor signal during cranking doesn't mean that the cam position sensor is bad, it just means that its not getting the signal. It may not be receiving the signal becasue of a wiring or connector issue (as someone already mentioned.)

Is this a V6? Might be the timing chain is striking the plastic valve cover (which is right under the upper intake manifold on the V6) and making a racket.

It was not raining when it stalled that I remember. But I will have it checked. Thanks!
