I just picked up a coolant temp sensor to see if that fixes the problem with my CEL. My question is, should I drain out the coolant before I change it or would it be ok to just swap it out real quick without draining the coolant?

Thanks in advance

all the temp sensor does is send the approx tempature to the guage it does not have anything to do with the cars computer. however the temp sender is the thing that sends the message to the computer. in answer to your question i dont beleave you have to drain your coolent to change the sensor or sender. i was reading about this about a week ago and i dont have my book with me right now so i am only 85% sure

your wrong about that!!!! the ect works to help the computer determine the temp of the engine, to help it determine wether the car needs more or less gas,to add or pull timing.......so yes it does have alot to do with the cars computer....ceebee, you wont change it fast enough not to lose any coolant but if done quickly you'll only lose a small amount...it comes down to wether or not you wont coolant on the floor/ground...

Yea, thats what I figured. I am just going to do it out in the street so I wouldn't care if a little coolant leaked out. Do you happen to have a pic of the location of the ECT by any chance because I went out real quick to see if I could find it, but I didn't see it. I took off the accordian tube and looked around under there but didn't see anything.

Thanks again for the help and hopefully this fixes my problem.

this is directly from haynes chapter 3 page 6 . " if the gauge indicates hot shortly after the engine is started from cold, disconnect the coolant temperature sender's electrical connector. if the gauge reading drops replace the sender. if the reading remains high, the wire to the gauge may be shorted to ground or the gauge is falty.

if the gauge fails to indicare after the engine has been warmed up(about 10 minutes)and the fuses are sound, stwich off engin, dissconnect the senders ellecrtical connector and use a jumper wire to connect the red/white wire to a cleen grounding point on the engin. stwich the ignition to on with out starting it. if the gauadge is now hot replace t he sender.

if the gauge still doesent work the circuit may be open or the gauge may be faulty"

I looked at were mine was on the car and said screw it...I am bringing it in. The changed it and the main mechanic gave the guy who worked on it a little grief cause he complained that it was a really tight fit to get at it. SO have fun with it.

I haven't had time to go work on it because of work and whatnot. I am gonna go take another quick look at it right now before I head to work, hopefully I can find it.
