Hey guys I have for the past year been riding around with my components in the doors with nothing to power them, so I figured this winter while its stored away I will finally get them powered. Anyway I have Vifa 7" mids, 4 ohms, 100wRMS, and Audax 1" tweets, 6 ohms, 50wRMS. I was wondering if I can wire the tweeters to 4 ohm or not? I was looking at getting the PG octane series R5.0:4 amp rated at 80wRMSx4 at 4 ohms, that way i figured it would be around 50-60 watts RMS. I need to stay on the somewhat cheap side for amps and JBL stopped making the amps I can afford. Any help would be great. Thanks, -Matt

What are you looking to spend? I would HIGHLY recommend the Alpine MRV-F540. Rated at atleast 80W x 4RMS @4ohms Mine was 87w X 4RMS. You should be able to find one for around $300 or so.

I would say don't hassel with the X-over.. Assuming your Components already came with them. And the amp you get should also have a good crossover on it. So to get the best amp you can, I'd say drop the X-over from the equation.

I bought them from parts express seperatly with no xovers. So that is why I figured I would add a xover into it, but if one is not necessary then I wont get one. Still not sure if I can drop 300 bones on an amp tho! Thanks, -Matt

You'll definitely need some sort of crossover for the set (either passive or active) Check PE, they usually have cheaper sets of Passive crossovers that will work.
The tweeter being 6 ohm is no problem. Most tweeters are usually attenuated anyway so this being 6 ohm would work out the same as a passive crossover with a -3dB output for the tweeter.

You will need some kind of crossover (set to approximately 2500Hz) to send the correct frequencies to the drivers. The two easiest options are:
(1) Electronic (active) crossover like an Audiocontrol 2XS that will split the pre-amp frequencies. You'd then need a 4ch amp to power each driver.
Head Unit --> Active Crossover --> Amp --> Speakers
(2) Passive crossover that splits an amplified signal. You'd only need a 2ch amp to drive the components.
Head Unit --> Amp --> Passive Crossover --> Speakers

From my experience with the Vifa 7" mids, they like a lot of power. I had originally powered them with 80w and it wasn't enough IMO. I now have 150w going to each component set and they handle it with ease (just be careful with the gains). You'll want to keep your tweeter at 6ohm like suggested above, so no worries there. I would suggest a crossover more in the 3000Hz range for the drivers you have. I had Madisound custom make some passive crossovers for me, but that may be too costly for you. If you are pwering each driver with a separate channel from the amp, then you can just use the amp crossovers. Btw, I love my set, once they get the right amount of power, they sing...

Path914, what kind of amp are you using? How much does Madi usually charge for some custom xover's? The tweeters say they can only handle 50w RMS so I didnt want to put to much power to them, I figured they could handle the 80w that the PG would put out. -Matt
