I went to replace the fuel filter tonight and couldnt get past step two on the intructions. For one thing, the picture in the intructions is nothing like the fuse box in my svt. Anyways, i found the right fuse and pulled it, yet the fuel pump was still providing pressure when i started it. Do you have to remove the pump relay as well?

Considering there is only one blue 15 fuse in the engine bay box, and i double checked it with the owners manual, i sure i hope i didnt pull the wrong one.

The best way to relief fuel pressure is to have the inertia fuel switch to shut. All fords have one. In the contour it is locate right beside the hood bezel, on the left kick panel. Remove the trim and the insulator. Knock the switch, you will see it and probably hear it pop. You will see the red button on the top of it pop up. When it pop that mean that the fuel pump will no longer work.

Start the car and wait for it to shut by itself. Then replace your fuel filter. Press sown the red button on the switch, reintall the trims. Do 2-3 OFF-ON ignition cylces and start the car.

Nic.

after pulling the fuse, you DID try to start the car, and let it use up all the pressurized gas, right?

You're right, the picture is different from that of a 2000 model. I just used the User Manual to determine the correct fuse.

I just did it two weeks ago for the second time. Stick with the fuel pump fuse_it's labeled in your owner's manual, and there's also a key on the inside of the fuse box cover (near where the little pincher-tool is stuck).

Just make sure you run the engine until it totally doesn't start--don't be scared of damaging anything, just keep cranking until you know there's no more chugging or anything.

A little gas spilling out is inevitable; just be careful and put a pan or something under the car, and look away when your tugging out the lines from the filter.

Oh, and by the way, BE CAREFUL with the fuel line connectors (not the disposable plastic clamps, the connectors actually attached to the lines). My fuel filter currently resembles a large gob of duct tape right now, because the connector is only sold attached to the $200 fuel line.

The lines can be a bear to get off the filter; just be VERY PATIENT. What ended up working for me was gently (very gently) grasping the elbow of the fuel line connectors with pliers and pulling with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Don't pull the filter or try to wedge a screwdriver between the filter and the connector to leverage it out(what I did, breaking the connector.)

It's a very, very easy job, but as with most jobs, there's potential there for real screwups.

It really isn't such a big deal to change the filter without releaving the fuel pressure. I don't bother when I change mine. Most nearly every tech I know doesn't either.

There are two additional ways to reduce the pressure if you feel that you need to. One is that you can chnage the filter after the car has been sitting for a few hours and the fuel system has lost pressure on it's own. The other is that you can releave the pressure at the schreider valve on the fuel rail. It looks a lot like a tire valve stem and hence the name since the valve core is similar. It is the port that a fuel pressure gauge is attached to for testing.
