Recently experienced a phenomenon with my check engine light going on and off and it turned out to be the friggin' gas quality from the local Safeway gas station.

DO NOT BUY SAFEWAY GAS...EVER!!

Very unlikely......

Most retailers purchase gas from local distributors called jobbers.

Most of the jobbers load their fuel from the same terminals as everyone else.

Until you scan the computer, you will never know WHY the CEL came on. To attribute it to a single gasoline purchase is not logical. It might have been an issue as simple as YOU not tightening the gas cap enough because of that super-sized soft drink in your hand or whatever.

Go get your codes scanned and see what the computer said was wrong...

I wouldn't put it past bad gas. My friend's GTI stopped running, we went through the standard procedures for what was going on, new fuel pump .. yadda yadda. Still would not run. Then totally by chance we were starting a fire in the wood burner (good ol fashioned heat) and went to use some gas that was drained from the tank and it barely lit on fire. We went out and bought 5 gallons from the local BP and never had a problem again.

Sounds more like he put diesel fuel in his car.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Actually Diesel fuel is easier to combust in a fire than gasoline is able to. We dumped a whole bunch of diesel on a fire from way up high and got a nice chili batch cooking.

But I do have to agree with bad gas. Similar story, my dad has a 2000 GT Mustang and bought gas from Racetrack and didnt notice the tanker pulling out. He filled up and after getting home (1 or 2 miles) he left it in the garage like normal. Next morning it would only turn over and after about 30 min it finally started and it ran like crap. This car had barely 40K on it too. He sucked all the gas out of the tank and put some gas we had in the garage into it and it ran rougher but then got better as the good gas got into it. I imagine the tanker had just filled up at your station and stirred all the sludge on the bottom up. Something big got in there and messed you up.

In 35 years of driving I have had bad gas just ONE TIME and that was in the 1980s. I think it had water in it....

Even when bad gas happens, you can't say it's any one gas station chain because there's always a fresh batch coming in.
