I've been having a reoccuring problem for about 3 months now.
Background: I had a local audio shop install a new: deck: Pioneer DEH-P3300 amp: GM-X952 Subs: ts-w304c (two 12's)
Once in a while, one of the subs stop working. I've taken my car back to see what's wrong and they said it was the patch cord was pinched. They replaced it for free, and the subs were working again.
two months ago, the one sub stopped working. I took it in and they said that it was the settings on the amp was all wrong (I never touched them). so they set up the amp again, and all was well. They also said that because the box is ported (not properly ported for my subs) that the subs aren't getting enough resistence, and is "shorting out". Also, yesterday, the one sub stopped working again.
My question is will an improperly ported box cause a sub to stop working? Or is there something fishy going on?

Well i've never heard anything like that happening before but in the world of electronics really anything is possible. Do the subs entirely stop working or is your amp just going into protection mode?

from all i know, if you use the wrong box, you wont get really good sound. if you bought everything at the same place, they should have given you the appropriate box with the subs. i guess it is possible to break the coils inside if there isnt enough resistance. sounds kinda funny to me though

well they sound fine. (when working)
Just the odd time the one sub will quit working. So, i think it has something to do with the amp going into protection mode (for some god unknown reason)
Meanwhile the other sub (hooked up to the same amp) is still pounding away.

How are they wired? Your amp is a 2 channel right? Did you try switching the subs around?
EDIT: If it went into protection, I doubt that one channel would still work, and the other wouldn't(Assuming you have it wired 1 sub per channel).

Yeah, it's a 2 channel amp.
Note: today the sub mysteriously started to work again. But I still wonder why it stops working on occation.

Those responses sound really fishy.
If a wire is "pinched" as they say, there should not be a problem unless they can prove that there was a break in the wire.
If a box is not matched to a paticular sub, you will only notice bad audio characteristics. If the sub doesn't work in that particular box, the only thing you should notice is that the sub would be beating itself to death. If that happens you will hear the all too apparant "cone slap" noise where the sub is actually bottoming out. Then after abusing the subs for a while, at low volume, you would be able to hear the noise of the coil in the sub giving up. It would sound like something was rattling in your sub.
Check also for the smell of cooked rubber. Tell tale sign of deceased sub.
It may be something as small as the wrong size push on connector on the sub and its falling off or is loose. Could also be a loose connector in the amp or the terminals on the speaker wires at the amp are loose.
I think that they may be trying to take you for a ride.
