My baby will be reaching 70k pretty soon, and I am already thinking about the oil I will switch to. At the moment, I am using Castrol 20W/50, and I am happy with it. I don't think I am making the jump to synthetic because of some implications, but wold like to know if I will need to increase my viscosity or is 20W/50 just fine to continue to use?

Implications? I hope you're not talking about those "leak" myths.

Anyway, I've used 5W-30 forever. Switched to synth at 50k with no problems. I just hit 70k.

I'd get off the 20W-50, if it were me, and use a quality 5W-30, whether it's dino or synth. Dino, I think Pennzoil actually tested about the best.

or is 20W/50 just fine to continue to use?

20W/50 was never fine to use in the first place. Nearly everyone here uses 5W/30, as recommended in the owner's manual.

Mine has 115,000 miles and I still use regular 5W/30 Valvoline. I change it and the filter every 3,000 miles.

Some sort of M-3 envy going on here....

I've used both M-1 0W-40 and GC 0W-30...and felt that they are both "too thick" for the SVT. 5W-30 (or either M-1 0W-20 or 0W-30) would be the ticket for our cars..

At about 190,000 miles I switched from Mobil dino and 3,000 mile intervals to Mobil 1 and 5,000 mile intervals.

At about 4,000 miles I need to add some oil (less than a quart). I do have a minor leak that I don't atribute to switching over and it still goes over 3,000 miles before any loss is noticable on the dipstick.

After three oil changes with Mobil 1, I tried Valvoline Max Life full synthetic to see if indeed it made any difference in the slight oil consumption. It did not. I bought up a bunch of the full synthetic Max Life on sale. Once it is gone I may switch back to Mobil 1. I doubt that I will go all the way back to Mobil dino and 3,000 mile changes, but it is possible.

I want to stress that what oil loss I have may be from leaks and even if it is burning some it still shows no loss until well past 3,000 miles.

You should have no reason to fear switching to synthetic.

Edit: And I should mention that I have always used 5/30. Quit using 20/50. It is not good for that engine.
