today i replaced my rear brakes. I replaced everything including rotors, pads, and calipers. When we got done bleeding both calipers and started the car, the pedal felt really spongy. We thought we didnt bleed the brakes right, so we did it again, no air came out. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is. We were thinking that we might have to bleed the front brakes too, but we arent sure why we would have too because we didnt take off those calipers. Any help would be great.

My brakes went out (rear lines broke) a month ago and they don't feel very crisp at all. I had my mechanic replace the lines and rear pads, and I know he takes his time and bleeds them right, so I didn't want to blame it on him, but I really feel like I have to hammer the pedal for hard stops. Sorry to hijack your thread, but hopefully it's a similar issue.

What type of brake fluid did you use? Not sure if that's the issue, but I'm fairly certain Ford used ATX fluid rather than a DOT 3 or 4 fluid. Not sure if the two together can give this feeling, but something to consider I guess.

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!

Don't ever put trans fluid (or any other oil) in a brake system. If you do, you will probably need to replace the master cylinder, all brake hoses, all calipers and/or wheel cylinders.

Oil products will damage the rubber in brake systems, causing them to swell.

Back to the original question. You may need to finish bleeding the system. You may also just need to allow the new pads to bed into the rotors. I havn't driven your car so I can't say for sure, but it is not uncommon to have a SLIGHT spongy feeling just from the pads not yet fully seating into the rotors.

Sometimes when bleeding it helps to tap the caliper with a hammer to help break up any air bubbles.

Why do people make such stupid posts?

And then put in there..."I'm not really sure, but I think..."

Well if you're "not really sure", then shut the hell up and let someone answer correctly before you hurt someone or something as a result.

Check your retaining spring.. this is most likely on backwards.... I bet you placed it back over the caliper upside down as it LOOKS like a perfect fit that way..

The wire should go OVER the caliper, from one side to the other, and not slighty underneath, where the metal just HAPPENS to fit perfectly, anyway..

Ah yes. Thanks Big Jim, I stand corrected. I almost found this out the hard way this past summer. My local dealerships told me to flush my brake system when I had it in to replace the e-brake lines under warranty, and they told me to use an ATF fluid. I actually bought some, but before using it, double checked with my Haynes manual which said to use DOT 3. Somehow I had things goofed up in my head, but now that I think back more... well that was some brain fart. Sorry for any confusion.

RE: Todd TCE, it was a mis-communication/recollection on my part. Although, the dealership did tell me to use ATF fluid, but are clearly wrong. Sorry to offend you or whatever. I'll never make a mistake again.

And I'm sorry I went off on you.

But I do have a REAL issue with people posting information that is (for those here who work on their car) blatantly inccrrect which can lead to serious repair cost, damages or worse.

I know it was not intentional. Just asking that if one is attempting to make factual statements that they be sure of them. Peace.
