Here's the deal,

About once a week or so, when I turn on the factory radio/cd player, the dissplay goes to AM and I lose all my audio settings.

I don't lose my radio pre-set channels though!

Any ideas?

Ugh this happened to me before. The factory players suck, they do not seal well against moisture. It is quite pricey to replace, so I recommend getting an aftermarket one instead.

Do the stock stereo systems come with a small battery to keep the memory or is is wired to the car to keep the memory? Maybe a capacitor?

Just thought the memory may get lost if backup is weak!

There is a keep-alive memory but I doubt that is failing. What you're describing are early signs of HU failure.

Ok what is "HU"?

I do have an old kenwood system with 25w/channel that I may have to see if it still works!

hey stephen you should your self a new HU. I work at futureshop and would be glady give you a good deal, and would install it for you too!

"HU" = Head Unit

Like everyone else already pointed out, looks like you'll need a new head unit.
