OK Ive got this weird problem.
My car, 99 SE Sport V6 MTX 67,000 miles, was running great, but the air cleaner is dirty (have a SVT air cleaner installed) and Im due for a smog test. So I go buy a new (Fram) air cleaner and install it and my car starts running like crap, surging and sputtering while I'm driving. It was also idling really low and loopy while making the valve train clatter. I pulled the two fuses for a few minutes to reset the commuter and it still runs the same. I yanked out the new air cleaner & put the old one back in and it runs fine again. Whats up with that??????????????????????
ANY IDEAS?

NEVER buy fram for a tour... I bought a fram filter for my tour once... mistake, so i just said "to hell with it" and bought a CTA air intake, lol. I would go back to your auto parts store and buy a cheap-o one, or get the K&N SVT drop in.

But how could changing the air cleaner have such a drastic effect on the engine? I cant imagine a new air cleaner is cutting of the air supply or something.

In your driveway (don't drive it) take the Fram out, put it all back together and run the engine. How's it running? Better? Then it's the air filter.

But I've never heard of a bad Fram either....

It looks like there is more to the problem than just the air cleaner. I had the old air cleaner back in the car and it ran great. While the engine was running I pulled the air cleaner element and the idle speed dropped and the engine started missing. It might be running way to lean with no air cleaner or new air cleaner.

any check engine light? Have you replaced your Plugs, wires, and/or coil pack lately?

Nope the check engine light is not on. I had a check engine light come on about a year ago, but I reset the computer and the light never came back on. The wires and coil pack are the stock items. I don't think they have ever been replaced.
If the computer is reset by pulling the fuses (I think #4 & #11) does it delete the old codes? Or are the old codes still in the computer. I will fail the smog test if any old codes pop up, so I need to make sure they are deleted from the computer.
