Hey guys and gals. Question for dog owners. We just got us a 14 week old black lab mix puppy and I have never house trained a dog. My dad trained our old dog. What is the best way to housebreak a puppy?
Thanks.

Very big stick !!

Dual purpose tool with dogs ... play time and SPANKING TIME!!

Seriously though, if you're not sure, find a dog trainer/school and ask them for some help/literature. There is a lot to consider, and some things are more breed specific too.

cetch them in the act and use the loud pissed off mean voice every time, then when ever you have them outside to go give them a treat, it has worked for all my dogs, 3 right now, in a probably 2000-3000 SQ Ft house

If they're deaf (or even if they're not), rolled up newspaper is pretty useful.

Take the dog out A LOT! Tell the dog to go *insert word* (potty or whatever you chose to use) and when the dog goes, praise the h**l out of it. Tell the dog good girl (or boy) and use a happy, silly voice. You can also use a piece of it's puppy food as a reward.

I worked with a Labrador Retriever Rescue and had about 25 Labs in my house over a five year period. Trained quite a few of the rescues as well as my two Labs.

Feel free to PM me if I can help you further.
Good luck with the puppy!

You shouldn't actually do this, it makes them aggressive to paper carries ... such as the paperboy.

Congrats on the new puppy, Renee!

You can train your puppy yourself. Basically it involves:

1) Pick up the puppy when he starts sniffing around like he's looking for a place to pee/poop, and carry him outside to the place you want him to pee/poop;

2) Praising the puppy like crazy when he pees/poops where you want him to.

3) Don't yell at or hit the puppy when he makes mistakes. He won't understand, and he will develop behavior problems.

These are just the basics; there is a lot more to know. Get a book on raising a puppy. They all have chapters on housebreaking a puppy.

Good, dogs should be kept inside or in a fenced in area. But really I think it would make them fear the paper boy.

Fear and aggression go hand in hand though.

all good advice. the best trained dog i have ever had is my current dog, who is 1 1/2. positive re-enforcement is the only way to go. when she was a pup, we took her out almost every hour, or whenever she sniffed for more than a second. we would say to her "outside" while scratching our hands on the door. we never crated her, but eventually had to create a "room" for her in the kitchen b/c of her chewing problem.
