After start up on cold days usually 30 and below, loud sqeaking comes from the engine. It also seems to happen more often when its wet out and when I accelerate then it just stops. Any way to fix the problem or is it something that an old car does (1998 Contour with 78,000)

pop your hood and take a look at your serpentine belt.... take a look at a spot where you can see the bottom side of the belt wrapped around a pully (engine should not be running) if there is cracking there... its time to replace the belt... I am willing to bet that is your stock serp. belt with 78K miles. Get a goodyear gatorback belt... when you hit higher RPM's they tend to whine and sound like a supercharger

seeing that you say it does it when WET out and you accellerate, I would look in to tensioners, etc.. allowing the belt to slip, slightly, and the sound would be exaggerated when wet, and under load (accellerating) that or the belt may be old and worn/stretched, still allowing it to slip and squeal.
