When I tried to start my 96 contour zetec with the automatic transmission, it would crank and then just not do anything. Thinking it was a dead battery I tried to get a jumpstart. That didn't work. I have taken the battery to get tested at O'Reilleys and it checked out good and only took about five minutes to charge it all the way. We put it back in with the same results. The headlights work just fine, and do not dim when I attempt to crank it. I'm wondering if it's my starter or not. If so, is it easier to get at it from the top or the bottom? Any ideas would be helpfull. Thanks in advance. Josh

If there is absolutely no response from the starter when the key is turned to START, possibilities are:

Ignition switch - Check for power at the following switch while in START
Park/Neutral Sensor/switch (try starting in NEUTRAL)
PATS system (if equipped)
Any alarm interlocks (if equipped)
Starter motor (solenoid)

Troubleshooting the fault will give you confidence that you are replacing the correct part and not just guessing until you guess correctly.
