I think as long as you stay at 160kpbs or more, you shouldn't notice a difference in sound quality. Obviously though, there will be a difference as mp3 compression is a lossey compression. If I were to go all out with mp3's, I would probably go with some sort of hard drive storage as I could then use high encoding rates....my only gripe with mp3 players i ngeneral is that you have SO many songs, especially with hard drive models, it's a pain to navigate through all the folders and/or create playlists to find the songs you wanna hear, as opposed to just having a disc you made with 10-15 tracks on it and you can skip through and just hear what you want. That's just me though, for the most part I listen to the radion anyway.

That can be fixed by organizing differently. I just got a new Dension DMP3 hard drive based player, and I rearranged my MP3s into directories based on the artist name. I'm writing a program to further break them down by album name and track number, so I can recreate the actual play order of the CDs. I also have a mp3mixes directory with different types of music, each in their own subdirectory. Those directories are around 175 songs each and used to be what I burnt MP3 CDs from for my CDC-MP3, but that works well for the Dension too. And of course a good interface on the player helps too.

I use WinMX to get 192kbps...I love it! Lots of people knock it, but it has been great for me.

Blaupunkt San Jose is a great deck, but it's got RED illumination! If you like Christmas, go for it! BTW, it's not switchable to green.
I went with a Pioneer Premier DEH-P740MP. Three sets of preouts and pretty nice sound. Access time is a little slow (about 5s) and the organic EL display isn't everyone's cup 'o tea. It was under $300 shipped.
Just don't get the non-Premier P7400MP as it's only got two preouts.

I just got the Alpine 7995 installed and it's great! It has 3 rca outs and a bunch of features like media expander which restores 'punch' to mp3s. Kinda expensive though at $500 installed from a local dealer; goes on ebay for around $375, but I didn't want to wait.

I really want an optical unit so I can add a processor later if I want without the analogue losses, but I'm not sure if I like the 7998's Fantom Face thing. If the 7995 has optical then it leaves me the choice between the two. The 7995 has no internal amps right? Also how is the MP3 disc loading and track skipping times on that unit? Cheers

Geez, I really like that Alpine above. Where are they being sold for cheaper on Ebay? and why?
Blaupunkt San Jose illum's in amber/red? Anyone have a picture of a head unit with amber/red in the car with the green lights from everything else contrast pictures?
OK, bang for buck what's the verdict? I'll go from there. Thanks.
