I'm in the prosess of fabricating a custom center dash to fit my multimedia flip-up screen. I am looking at relocating the 3 fan/temp control knobs down to the bottom of the new panel and putting 1 or 2 din spots above. Has any one tried this?

If you have a Pre98 you can put the stereo in above the ashtray and it isn't alot of work.

The swap I'm thinking of was actually in a Focus, which is why I didn't go into detail. Basically he mounted the HVAC panel under the steering wheel, not exactly handy. I've seen it in a Contour as well but can't find an example. That guy had the AC just above the ashtray, the EQ in the regular DIN and the screen in where the HVAC panel once resided. It would probably be an easier swap in the Contour since the console (at least on pre-98s) is arranged in a column and not a lobsided boob shape thing like in the Focus.

Assuming the switches are all electrical and not mechanical like in my 82 Jetta it sould be pretty straightforward.

Some dude also put the HVAC switches in the console behind the parking brake...I know I've seen pics, just can't remember who it was.

I've only just begun this project, once I get going I will post some pics. Picked up a center piece at the wreckers to use as a template. In the design and layout phase now.
