My son has a 1998 Mercury Mystique (2.5 liter V6, auto trans). The heater/defroster only blows cold air. My guess is a problem with the dash temperature control switch or the engine coolant control valve for the heater system. Any suggestions for additional troubleshooting? The big question is, does the dash have to be removed for access to the control valve.

Welcome to CEG!

When getting no heat we would suspect a broken water pump impeller first. Do not let the car overheat!

The temperature door is controled by a motor behind the center console. Sometimes the rod will come out of the hole for the damper door.

Is there any overheating problem? Cuz water pump are a common problem on the V6.
Is the upper radiator hose is hot when the cold reach his normal temperature?
If we are talking about the same part, which i though you mean the blend door (the trap that mix hot/cold air), you don't have to remove the dash.

Remove the glovebox compartment;
Remove the footwell trim panel;
On one side you will see the blower motor and on the opposite you will see the blend door motor.

Blend door motor location.

Blend door motor screws.

Nic.

Seems to me that I have seen a similar thread on this issue. From memory only, the vacuum line either pops the control valve, or the line itself is prone to cracking therefore the valve gets no vacuum.

You may want to try a few "creative" searches in order to find that thread!
