"In the end I found it was the IAC valve. I had idle problems as well...but dont ask me why, it would not start because of the IAC, but after I cleaned it out its been running and starting fine.
That... makes... no sense.
And yet, strangely par for the course in these cars...
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Had a similar problem with IAC for 95 Contour V6. I would be driving along on the highway, I would slow down at a intersectiona and the care would go dead. Would not start. Wait 45 minutes and car would start up fine and I could continue on..... Replaced the IAC and the problem never appeared again. To me it makes sense the car would quit running when at idle or stopped and it is idleing as compared to driving down the highway. IAC Idle Air Control Valve. Apparently the valve was stuck open? and it would never start until it cooled down...

He's right. I had the same problem about a week ago. Taasman dropped me a PM to try cleaning the IAC. I did it and the car started. It has been running normal since. Just for the heck of it, I also cleaned the TB. If your rpms have been very jumpy in idle, especially upon cranking the car, it might be a good idea to try cleaning it. I thought the idle was jumpy due to the cold, however since cleaning the IAC, the idle has been normal upon cranking. Give it a try.

OK - what a mess these things are. So the shop had it for teo days and found NOTHING wrong - started everytime. Has worked for 2 days now - but had to crank a bit this morning. One of these days - maybe today - i'm gonna try and leave and it won;t start. When it does I'll try cleaning the IAC - i printed out the FAQ with the picture - looks pretty easy.
Will WD40 work?

No WD40 is no good...use carb cleaner, and spray it into the opening and tilt it on end and let it sit for awhile. Rinse it out again with another shot of carb cleaner, put your finger over the opening with it full of the spray and shake it to clean inside good. You might want to pick up a new gasket before you start...I damaged mine and had to make a new one.

There we go Again! I think my Tour just doesn;t like my work parking lot cuz thats where it always dies. This time drove fine for like 6 days - then Sat night at like 11:30 PM it a no go. Haven't been able to get to it yet (pregnent wife, kids), but again will buy some carb cleaner and shoot for the IAC asap.
Question on the fuel pump cutoff switch described in the manual - If that thing was triggered - would the car crank at all? I ask because i can't feel a button to push in there - almost like its stuck down or something....

If the fuel cutoff switch was triggered, the car would still crank. The switch controls only the fuel pump; the starter will still work fine.
If the button feels like it's pushed in, it hasn't been triggered; normally, it's supposed to be stuck down.
When the car dies, can you smell gasoline at the exhaust pipe after cranking for awhile? If so, I doubt it's a fuel delivery problem.

my 99 svt has been exhibiting the same problems, and I've checked the usual culprits. First did it a a month ago. Then everything was fine but now its done it the 3 out of the last 3 days. Though if I leave it and come back in an hour it will start.
Just cleaned the IAC.
If its turning over strongly I would assume that indicates a strong enough battery.
I've been getting a CEL 136 code but that comes and goes and I didn't think it was relatd since that is one of the rear Oxygen Sensors (sensor is fairly new, so that's probably a wiring issue.
