'98 CSVT with 63k miles. I am hearing an engine whine that goes up with RPMs, most noticable at 1k rpms. The sound seems to be coming from the rear timing belt cover, passenger side of engine. The sound goes away sometimes. I replaced the idler pully. Any ideas?

yeah, I my 96GL does the same thing, its the power steering pump, when they get older then tend to whine a little, imitate a Supercharger... I get asked ALL of the time "Does that thing have a supercharger?"

We had that noise as well. One shop said it was the power steering pump, and it would be rather expensive to replace in this car, so basically, "live with it".
We took the car to a stealership for another problem, and I asked them to look at the "power steering pump noise" as well. It turned out to be the idler assy on the accessory belt system. They replaced the assembly and the belt, and now the noise is gone.

I've taken the drive belt off, started the engine, and still get the whine. Has anyone experienced this? Could the timing chain be the culpret?

This is what it sounds like (with the drive belt on or off):

Do you notice it as you're driving?
I've got the same thing that started happening after a touchless carwash (coincidence?), although the whine goes up as the revs do and then at about 3k rpm it goes away.
I've replaced the idler pulley and the tensioner assembly with no luck (mine whine's on the passenger side too).
My next step is to remove the belt too and see if it continues ... might end up being p/s pump as has been mentioned??
First one to cure it, please post back.

Yes, I do notice it while driving. Mine too goes away over 3k rpm. I'm thinking timing chain or chain tensioner pulley which I fear, but would be surprised as these things should not be problematic at 63k miles. Engine power is strong though. Its just annoying, and could be bad long term.

Are we sure this isn't an alternator whining?
They can sometimes whine as they are getting on their last leg.
