Hello all, I have a 1998 Contour V6 119k miles. Yesterday, I tried to start up the car at work and it started easy enough but the revs went up to 2k and then it immediately died. I had to start it up like 2-3 more times and the only way I could keep it running was if I gave it more gas. On the way home from work the idle was rough at a stop but otherwise it ran fine and didn't stall.

I just recently did the UIM cleaning and this morning I cleaned the IACV but I still have the same problems. Do I need to change the IACV or could it be something else? I actually replaced the IACV back at 76k. Thanks for any help.

sounds like vacuum leak with my very limited knowlegde. I say that cause when I was cleaning the uim, with the vacuum line disconnected, the engine would do that(2k then stall). Make sure the lines you took out to clean are all the way in. Try pulling them out and covering the holes with electrical tape or something to seal and start it.

Lowbudgetracing- Is there any reason why you think the ECT is bad? I don't have any CELs and the last time I put my scanner on the car the temp was reading around 205-210. Not sure if that matters or not.

Steve-o- I was also thinking vacuum leak and I think I'll give the car another once over to see if I can detect anything. I did notice that the IACV seems to be listed a lot as the culprit in these circumstances and Ford actually recommends replacement rather than cleaning. Hmmmm.....

if this started after the intake work then you probly have a vacume leak

Weird. After doing a little more reading, I noticed that I should have disconnected the negative battery cable to let the computer reset after cleaning the IACV. I didn't think I needed to do this since I didn't have any CELs. Anyways, I did it this morning and the car was rough at first but seems to have gotten better. I guess the answer is self-evident but I didn't think that just a cleaning of the IACV would require a reset.
