Ok, so last night I'm comming home and as I slow down in front of my house, I hear this awful rattling noise on deceleration. It sounds a lot like engine knock, but it's only on deceleration, and not at idle. This morning I wake up, get in to go to work and as I slow down at the stop sign it's doing it again. I can rev the engine and not hear the noise. Being as i've dealt with a spun bearing before I decided not to drive it and have it towed (yes I know I can look at it myself, and no I have no desire to do that). I get a call from the mechanic at the Stealership (queue the "that's a rip" ) stating they think it's something in the tranny, but it's going to be $1000 to rip it apart and look. I'm not sure I really want them to do that to just "maybe see if that's the problem" They've tried to screw me on that before. I guess I'm just venting but do you have any ideas what would cause that noise? It's almost like a baseball card in a bike spoke sound. Or, does anyone in the GR area have a beater they want to sell me . I'm seriously thinking about parking the car in the back, and getting something else.

it was the "card in a bicycle spoke" statement that did it for me..

I would assume it could be the tensioner or idler underneath the timing cover. Lack of oil pressure causes rattle like that. Try searching up on the idler pulley and tensioner failures to see what you get. if they AREN'T broken, they could be rattling merely from a lack of oil pressure as most svt's do notice upon cold startup for a split second. (try getting an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve in it..)
