My 98 Mystique (V6,50 K miles) failed to start a few weeks ago when the temp got to @ 5 deg, 24 hours later when the temp rose to the 20's it started and ran fine. This morning it was 9 deg and it would not start. I have good battery (It cranks strongly) but it does not even attempt to turn over. There is no CEL and in the few weeks in between the car ran fine with no idle problems and performance was fine. I put 2 cans of dry gas in thinking that it may have some water and have done extensive searches turning up some possibilities, MAF, Throttle Position sensors, Fuel filter, PCV Valve and IAC. Does this set of circumstances give you folks any ideas. Every time I think about taking it to my mechanic the problem goes away (It gets warmer). Thanks for any advice.

I had the same problems has you described. This after I had replace the plugs, wires, battery, fuel filter and pcv valve. (Part of my normal "new to me" car routine) I still couldn't start the car in cold weather. I replaced the IAC and have been able to start the car in minus 40degrees with minimal fuss and no plugged in block heather.

Hope it helps,

Eric

the cold does funny things to cars when the temp gets that low, it is just normal

now my starting issues are because I have 10w-40 in the car so it is very slow to turn over in this cold weather

I had this problem too and all it took was a new battery, if your battery is the original as I suspect mine was that COULD be the answer.

I find with my 4 cylinder,it will not start if it is -20c or colder. It will start to crank, but very slowly, and then start to run,but it stutters and then stops turning over, but the starter motor is still turning even though I have taken the key out of the ignition! This would continue until the battery either died or I disconnected it. After boosting the car,it would start.

Maybe a block heater would be a nice christmas present next year, lol. Even my RX7 with the troublesome rotary engine would start in that kind of weather!

Yup ! Or if you don't feel like popping a freeze plug out, get a tank type heater from Crappy Tire. Don't have to drain out as much coolant with those. There are a couple of guys where I work that have newer Vw diesels and there is no block heater available for them. They got those tank heaters and love them. They both said that their car starts like summertime !
