I have a 96 SE 5spd and I just found out one of my rear springs was busted. Belle Tire told me I need to replace that spring and both struts, because they get destroyed pulling them out. they wanted $470 for a new moog spring and Monroe shocks/struts installed.
I like the way it handles, and I don't want to degrade the handling. I also don't want the car any lower, its enough of a piglet in the snow, and I would also like to have children some day, so I don't wanna rattle my b***s off.
That said, whats a good source for the OEM spring and or strut, and what are good alternatives? I thought the SE had a different strut then the LX and wanted to avoid the 1 part number applies to everything syndrome.
If this is the wrong forum for this, I appologize and could ya move it for me? Thanks.

what the frick did they do to destry the springs when pulling them out?!?!? if i were you i would look into that. perhaps the place doing the work should be held liable for the part replacement. better yet make them pay for SOMEBODY else to replace the parts and install them.
that said, best to just go with a bat kit. i am sure others will agree. if not i would say stock svt stuff. as far as sources i know that somebody else can help you here because i can not.

He's our guy for stock replacement parts. Gives us a great discount, and he can get you the SE specific struts I believe. You can read more about Bill in the first stickied post in the General Forumn.

They said if you replace the springs, you destroy the strut so it cannot be re-used. I haven't had them do anything with it yet though, it was just in to get front wheel bearing. Does the BAT kit lower the car? That would also mean I have to do all 4 springs and struts, right?

These guys don't know sh!t.

You do not have to damage anything when swapping either the springs or struts.
Take you car elsewhere and as far away from these asshats, as possible.

I am in the process of going back to the original suspension on my 96 SE. I had the Bat springs with the SVT stuts, which lowered the car about 1.250". I put on new rear SE springs # FR5Z-5560, about $53 each with the discount from Signature L/M. Haven't done the fronts yet.
If you have over 50K on the suspension. I would get new struts also. They cost about $60 each.

I thought the rear BAT springs were too stiff for me. The car has the raked look to it now though, with the rear stock springs. I feel it rides a bit better with the stock springs. I have an $85 credit with Bat for a defective front Spax strut. I am undesided if I will go with the stock SE struts or the Sachs Super Gas strut. I know it isn't as firmly valved strut as the stock SE ones.
