Replace upstream front O2 sensor.

It's the easy one.

Took it to my mechanic and he wants to change both O2 sensors, is this necessary?

Sk him for evidence that thge other sensor is bad.

If you brought your car in with one defective sparkplug, he'd likely want to replace them all.....

My mechanic can not fix my car until Monday, today is Friday. If the problem is just the O2 sensors is it still alright to drive the car? I have at least an hour commute to work and don't want to get stuck anywhere. The only problem that I seem to have is that when I am picking up speed on the highway the car sputters a couple of times until I reach about 45 miles per hour then it is fine.

The P1151 code will not stop your car from running anyway. It will continue to drive without any noticable change in behavior except for slightly higher fuel consumption. Left unrepaired for too long (months), however, it will increase chances of cat converter failure.

The "sputtering" as you called it, it not likely related to this sensor. That will have to be addressed separately. Common causes are plugs, wires, or restricted fuel delivery.

Had both of the o2 sensors changed on Monday, my mechanic was asking about another sensor near or around the exhaust but couldn't locate. Another code came up a P0153 which he said is related to this other sensor that he couldn't find. Is there another o2 sensor near the exhaust somewhere. Anyway the check engine light came back on again on Wednesday. The car is still sputtering when going up hill around 3rd gear, its an automatic 6 cyl. Anyone know what kind of problem I may have.

Are you sure this guy is really a mechanic? I'm wondering based on your description of his diagnostic technequies...

What replacement O2 senors did he use? The P0153 points to a problem with the just-replaced upstream front sensor unless...

Did he clear the KAM before returning the car to you?

Did you read my last response regarding the sputtering?

Steve

Yes I know I need to find a new mechanic, this one is okay when it comes to basic stuff but I don't think he is really good with diagnosics. Anyway, I haven't had the car rescanned yet since the light came back on. I am taking it back to him today. I also asked him to check the tranny because of the sputtering. I had a tune up not too long ago so he said that the fuel filter shouldn't be clogged. I don't know anymore this car just keeps giving me headaches. So both of the codes the P1151 and the P0153 both relate to the two sensors that he said he changed. I will write back later after I take the car in to see if any other codes popped up. Is there anything else I should ask him or tell him to do for the sputtering? Thank you so much for all your help.
