I just brought a 99 contour SE, and I saw some review on the web saying this car is very bad, is that true?
I am wondering what should I be aware of this car?
Would there be lots of problem with this car?

Spend some time reading the forums, and I think you'll discover a side of the Contour/Mystique that's missed by many reviews.

There are some common maintenance issues and problem areas you'll need to learn about (all cars have them), but the contour.org FAQ areas are a great place to get started.

I believe the Contour is a great mix of handling, performance and affordability. The development of the SVT models means there are lots of upgrade goodies available.

What I've learned from this community has helped me go almost 10 years now in my '95 GL with virtually no problems. And my maintenance costs have been very low, thanks to the knowledge I've gained here to do most work myself.

Quick story: I ended up driving a friend's Accord back and forth to work for a few days due to travel schedule issues. It wasn't until I was back in my Contour that I realized just how simply *boring* the Honda was - as I caught myself laughing out loud after swinging out of an exit ramp, listening to my V6 run up to 6000+ RPM.

Drive and enjoy!

P.S. Welcome to CEG!

All EXCELLENT !!!

No matter what engine you have I-4 or V-6, you'll want to get a tranny cooler installed if you have the automatic. That will likely save you lots of trouble in the future.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Thank you on the advise!

Where can I get those cooler?
Should I get it online and take it to somebody and get it installed?

To answer your question go here:

http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tranny&Number=655008&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1

I plan to put an external cooler this summer once it warms up as well.

Reviews are based on magazine producers that hold a car for a month max (unless they do one-year/40,000 mile long term loans, and even then that's only on the most popular of cars) so they're going to notice little annoyances before they notice where a car like the Contour can really shine.

Of course, there's things about these cars that bug the living bitchiness out of me:

-the cupholders suck
-Zetec ATXs can be outrun by 18 wheelers
-decontenting sucks
-trying to find a decent one these days sucks
-the Duratec's stock output is bettered by some four cylinders on the market today
-wheelhop sucks
-ATX sucks
-FWD sucks
-whiny people on this website suck...oh wait.

But this is all forgiven once you toss this little rascal into an onramp at double the posted speedlimit.

Moreover, just about any car will take care of you if you take care of it. We have some Contour's on this website that have gone 275K without any super huge problems. Keep your fluids, especially your oil, topped off or clean. If you have the ATX, don't be stupid and try to drop it from neutral at 5000 RPMS, because I can GUARANTEE you that you will be leaving your transmission in the middle of the road if you try it. If you have the MTX, don't be stupid with that either, but it is a little more lenient than the ATX is.

Basically, just keep a close eye on your car. The best part about this is that we're all here to help you do exactly that.

-SAV

PS: I know Hector will be in here any minute about my comment on ATX Zetecs. Don't mind him.
