Hey all! First off, thanks for having such an informative forum! It has helped me out many times.

OK.....now for the ugly part! I've got an 1996 contour gl 2.0 zetec with atx and 107,000 miles. For the last year it has ran terribly! It idles rough while in Park and exspecially in gear sitting still with my foot on the brake!

I've replaced and gone through everything i could think of and broke down and took it to the $tealer twice.

Item's replaced/service done:

oil
flush radiator
timing belt
belt pulley's
belt tensioner
water pump
water pump pulley
battery
plugs and wire's (motorcraft from dealer)
ECU puter
wiring harness
atx position sensor
air filter
various gasket's replaced
coolant temp sensor


It's just getting worse, stalling at light's and forget the A/C in the summer. the dealer recommended replacing the ECU, when i did the car still ran the same. all of these things that i have done have been by the book. please .......any suggestion's or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, thats a very common problem onces contour pass 100K miles... the IAC valve gets sticky.

What do you mean it runs rough? Does it seem like it's misfiring or is it just vibrating? It's common for the tranny mount to go bad and allow the transmission to sit on the engine cradle. This will cause a vibration that would be worse at idle, in gear at idle and when the car is under load like with the a/c on. It tends to be confused with a misfire. You would really feel it through the steering wheel. If it's misfiring the dealer should have been able to come up with something because with the OBDII diagnostics it in most cases is sensitve enough to point you to the right cylinder(that is if it is misfireing). Low or high fuel pressure can cause a car to run rough. You can check the fuel pressure at idle and at various RPMs. At 100K you could be looking at a fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator. Also vaccumm lines should not be over looked, but in most cases a vaccumm leak should show up with a code scan.

IDLE AIR CONTROL....CHECK THAT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow thanks for the quick replies guys. is there anyway to test the IAV short of replacing it? it is missing really bad and stall's quite often.

Do you have a check engine light on?

your best bet is an IAC valve.

Check all your vacuum hoses for air leaks also
