I went ahead and bought the 02 Explorer XLS V6 I was looking at. 31k miles. Small scar on rear bumper from what looks like a small towing f-up. Otherwise excellent condition. $14150. Dark blue in color, tan interior. The Bravada was starting to ride pretty rough, this Explorer drives very smoothly. The independent rear suspension really is an improvement.
Another big improvement: for a truck, the steering is very precise. If I rated a feel of control on 1-10, the Bravada was a 4 and the Ford is an 8, about as good as I have felt in a truck, and better than a lot of shitbox cars I have driven.
Overall, I feel like it is a big improvement in platform sophistication.

I hear that Explorer's are horrible off road though.
Thats why I bought a Jeep. I've been mudding a few times, and Dayum its alotta fun!
Have fun with your Sport Utility Vagina.
On a side note: Do you know why it was towed? Has it been in any accidents, or had any major engine repair? You gotta be careful when buying used cars. I hope you got a warrenty.

No, I meant it looks like when hooking up a trailor to it, they somehow put a knick in the plastic bumper surface. Nothing major. I bought it as a highly practical daily driver, with the ability for light off-road needs and some light towing. I didn't buy the Explorer for heavy off-road needs. If I really want to get dirty, I've got the GMC. Or the 4wheelers. Or the horses (they are the ORIGINAL off-road vehicle )

I know Exploders aren't bad offroad, I had a lightly mod'd '91 and it did well (My highly mod'd '96 ZJ did much better though). The newer Exploders I can't say much about other than the rentals can take a beating well

So what? For an everyday driver that needs only some utility, it's a great car. Seriously, my friend has a wrangler....the vehicle is horrible. Plain uncomfortable... You want a comfortable car you can relax in. Smooth, easy to drive, you can carry alot of stuff and if you happen to get yourself off-road you will still be alright. Even my 92 exploder has a lot more usefulness to me than any other car, even my svt. It's not like your average person goes rock crawling. WTF Mate?? Not everyone buys an SUV for the off road capibility. Not every SUV is made for that or is a 4X4. The Explorers are really nice and MUCH more comfy than a Jeep. We have a 94 Explorer that we picked over a Jeep Cherokee because of the fact that it was more comfy and better to drive. Jeep was just plain BLAH. I am sure you love your Jeep, but please don't go bashing the Explorer over something the owner probably didn't even buy it for.

The only thing that's worse than the others is ground clearance.

I would say 95% of people who buy SUV's have no intent or interest in going off the road. Most of us want 4WD to get down our streets when they're covered in ice and snow (like right now!). I never intend to take my Explorer off the pavement, as its too expensive a vehicle to tear up mudding around in. I also needed something to carry large stuff like trash cans and the lawnmower in, which obviously won't fit in the Mystique. For me, the Explorer is a comfortable and practical alternative to a pickup truck.

I have an Explorer and mine does pretty well offroad. The only trouble I have ever had with it, is with the street tires it has, it doesn't do so hot in the deep mud. I am postitive that off road tires will make a world of difference.
