I changed the rack without dropping the subframe, and with everything in place. Quite a job. I dropped the rear of the subframe only about 2". Pulled the coil off the rear cam cover to snake an extention down to the bolts. Everything else,(tie rod ends, steering coupler, P/S lines),was pretty simple. I stripped one subframe mounting bolt, and had to torch a hole in the body to cut the nut off.

You did'nt have to torch a hole into the subframe...all you have to do is lift your interior carpet, and cut out the little grill under the underpad and you have access to the top of the subframe bolt head. Oh well to late now...

Quote from my CD: On all models turn steering gear to full left stop.Remove mounting bracket and insulators.Put a cloth over both apron opening edges to protect boots during gear removal.Seperate gear from intermediate shaft.

Rotate gear forward and down to clear pinion shaft through dash panel opening. Ensure pinion shaft is in full left turn position. Move gear through right side apron opening until left tie rod clears apron opening. Remove gear from vehicle using care not to tear boots.

With all that said...I still think it helps to drop the sub a bit for the added room. But they say it can come out without doing so.

Hey Gliderjoe,
Were you able to change out the rack & pinion without dropping the subframe? I know you were in the process of doing so. Were you successful and are there any special tips someone else like me could benefit from in changing mine. Inquiring minds want to know. If anyone else has done this and was successful I'd like to hear from you as well.

Thanks,
Dave

I sucked it up and just paid a local shop to do it, since I did't have a lift. I went with Big Jim's suggestion on not doing this job without a lift. The local shop did it for $275 labor (make sure to check that all bolts have been replaced when you get the car back). I bought the rack for $120 and the Valvoline Synpower at Kragen. While you are at it, check the hoses and PS pump. My PS pump now leaks and I wish I would have just done the whole system. PS pump is $49 at Autozone and the hoses are like $50 at the stealership. I think the PS pump can be done pretty easily. Just takes time.
