I'm trying to pull the right halfshaft (to get at the [censored] alternator) on a '95 2.5L ATX Contour. What size socket does the axle nut require? (My biggest socket is 30mm - and I don't wanna buy a 32mm and get home and find out its also too small Thanks in advance...

I looked in the service manual and there is nothing about size. But it does require 250 lb/ft to put it back on

Can't you measure the width with a steel tape and use one of the many online conversion programs to convert it to metric?

The OEM axle nut (or locking spindle nut) is a ONE TIME USE only nut.. it is three plates held within a metal clasp and releasing the pretentioned weight off of these will likely cause failure holding at a later time. They "can" be re-used, but I wouldn't recommend it. Pick one up for 2.50 at napa, or autozone.

Okay, guys. Thanks for the size, and the many helpful suggestions.
(Some days I just get so my-optic in my thinking, when I really need to be 'thinking outside of the box'. You guys are like a breath of fresh air!!)

Don't need to pull the axle, just disconnect the tie rod.

Okay - my son is coming home this weekend and he said he has a 32mm impact socket.
I've got a couple of follow-up question: Once I get the axle nut off and disconnect the lower ball-joint, am I gonna have to loosen the upper strut attaching point so that I can push the axle stub out of the knuckle, or is that not necessary?
And the manual shows a special attachment for a slide-hammer to pull the halfshaft - do I need this tool, or can I just tug on the halfshaft and it'll slide off the intermediate shaft?
