My car had trouble with 2-3 shifts. Anyway, I changed the fluid with Pennzoil ATF synthetic blend and added the friction modifier. Now I can barely get it into 1st or 2nd, until the car warms up.

I got some Mobil 1 ATF, which I'm gonna try this weekend. Do I still add the modifier? What's this stuff really do? The bottle says to quiet gears in the rear......

PS
I got this filler from Walmart that goes on the end of the bottle, and has a release thing to let the oil out after the bottles upside down and the end is in the fill hole - makes life easy, especially as I try all tranny cocktails

Yes, you should add the modifier to the Mobil 1 ATF. Also, I can tell you that Henry Ford didn't invent the automobile. Karl Benz did in 1886.

Try ATF+3. It seems to work better than the others and already has enough friction modifier in the formula.

I agree with the ATF +3. I've used it for a couple of years now. We've had a couple of cold spells this winter where the temperature dropped to single digits (I know, that's not cold by some standards). But, with the temp around 8 or 9 degrees Fahrenheit, the car still shifted fine. Obviously, it was a little stiffer than normal for the first minute or so, but I could easily go to any gear I wanted.

It's been a hugh improvement for me this year. I had tried the Mobile1 and friction modifier as well as Redline MTL prior and both were useless in cold weather.

So how many quarts does one need for an MTX-75 and can one have jiffy-lube (or the like) do it? (it's too darn cold to lay on my back in the driveway right now )
And if so, what do you think the cost would be?

2.7 quarts until the trans was modified part way into the 2000 model year when it became 2.2 quarts.

just what is that magic friction modifier? What does it do in the trans ( i have no idea how a trans works or what a synchro is).

Can it help in the motor?

What about Amsoil 75W-90 gear oil. I heard it works well with the MTX-75 (as per an Amsoil rep) but I am uneducated with oils and do not know enough to be certain.

I have this issue with my new 2005 Fukus - it is impossible (almost) to get into gear when cold (-25 celcius and colder). After driving for 10-15 minutes it becomes useable.

I belive Ford is using a Synthetic manual trans fluid in the 2005's.
