is the steering rack on all 'tours the same? will a rack from a 97 gl work on a 98.5 svt?

The rack for the SVT is unique in that the steering stops are built into the rack and the SVT has them in a slightly different position to accomodate the SVT larger tires. Using the SVT tires and wheels on a non SVT might allow the front tires to rub when the steering is turned to full lock.

Other than that, I'm not aware of any differences. It would be wise to check a parts listing with a parts store, dealership, or a wrecking yard Hollander exchange.
