I have a 98 TRed Contour, 55,xxx. I have owned the car for about three years but recently i have had trouble with the steering/suspension and have also had trouble diagnosing the problem. First, the car does not handle like it should, or like it did when i first got it. The steering seems loose and it seems to cut more to the right than to the left. Secondly, highway driving is a pain in the a$$. the car drifts back and forth and needs constant correcting. Thridly, the car is HORRIBLE in the snow. Take what i said about highway driving and times it by 10. The car is just about undriveable in the snow above 15-20mph. It seems like the car is fishtailing like it was rwd, even when laying off the gas. I thought it would have been the control arms, i dropped it at the mechanic and told him to ck the steering and suspension and he told me everything looked fine but my motor mounts are toast, causing the car to pull when accelerating. Im fixing the motormounts next week...but i still think its gotta be a steering suspension problem. Lastly, my car was involved in a hit and run in front of my hosue last year, and the shop that fixed it did some minor work on the frame, im hoping they didnt screw my car up, it seems like it hasnt driven the same since then, oh yeah and ive had two alignments in the last year..ANY help is appreciated, thanks guys...and gals.

Assuming that the shop that checked the steering and suspension made sure that there were no loose ball joints and tied rod ends (this needs to be checked first), I suspect that your next step is to have the alignment checked. Do you have the alignment readings from when the hit and run repairs were made? Can you post them?

unfortunately i dont have any of the alignment readings. When i get the motor mounts done next week, im going to ask him specifically if he checked the ball joints and tie rods.
It wouldnt have anything to do with the control arms? Thanks again

Could be control arms also. Bushings could be worn.

jack up one wheel and pull it left to right and see if you have excessive play. If you do, check stab links, tie rods also.......
