I just thought of this aggravating although minor problem. My trunk release button on the keyfob doesn't work any more. Everything else does and the sucky manual I have leaves me clueless as to where to begin troubleshooting this problem.
The car is a 98 Contour SE 4-cylinder 4-door.
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated.

First you shoulsd try opening the remote controller and check that the trunk button is correctly align with the controls inside the remote.
If it still doesn't work, it's probably the remote itself. Try with a new one.

Do this test - while you press the trunk button, listen for a clicking sound coming from the glovebox. If there is a clicking sound, then the problem is with your trunk release electric motor being jammed, which is a common problem with Contours. If there is no clicking sound, then the problem is either with a faulty trunk button in your keyfob as Nic suggests, or with the actuator behind the dash. Do a search in Troubleshooting for more info. There are a lot of discussions on key fobs and trunk release motors and such...

Thanks guys. Again, the friendly folks on this site have probably saved me a fair amount of time and choice language trying to figure out the problem. Although I probably would have gone into the fob itself, I had no idea where the actuator was.

The cable release has nothing to do with opening the trunk with the key fob. All Contiques with keyless entry has electric trunk releases. Since all SVT's have keyless entry, yours has and electric trunk release as well as the cable release.

there is a orange tab inside the trunk. right below the latch itself. this tab controls "valet mode". valet mode makes the keyless entry and the interior trunk opener inoperative.

When I first got my contour I had the stock keyless entry and the trunk button never worked, no clicking, nothing. Silence inside the car.
Where do I look for my trunk button? I looked in my glove compartment but there is no button. I have the latch over on the left side but it doesnt make that power trunk release noise like my dads GT or my brothers escort does (which ironically is the base model)
I really think my car didnt come with a release solenoid because there is nothing in the trunk indicating it. The car is in the shop right now getting new suspension put in but I will look this afternoon when I go pick it up.

The button is on the key fob that you carry in your pocket with the keys.

I replaced the stock keyless entry with an UNGO alarm system.
