Hi, I have a 98 Contour SE 2.0L 90k miles and the mechanic said it would cost me 800 bucks to change the timing belt because it jumped 1 or 2 teeth and it's kinda old. A timing belt it costs me 60 bucks and I have the Haynes manual. My question is: can I do it myself? Is there something I could brake or damage there?
I checked the FAQ's already.
Thanks a lot guys.

yup that would be the correct how to for a 98 zetec, i also posted one for the pre 98
but in any event if can be done at home with the propper tools and some time, this isn't something you want to rush and it involves removing motor mounts and stripping the front of the engine to get to the belt
if the belt has already gone and the timing is shot I would take it to someone, but that is because I don't think I have seen good instructions on resetting the timing
almost forgot, replace all the pullies otherwise you might run into trouble later on, the water pump if you like but that isn't as important

That is more than easy, lock the camshaft with that flat piece of iron, temporarily install the crankshaft pulley and align the marks with the oil pan notches. IIRC the Haynes manual even has pictures.
This is something you'd do anyways after a t.belt replacement just to doublecheck everything is right.

degetel77, to warn you now- not long ago on this site there was an issue w/ a newbie changing a timing belt. She screwed up, and destroyed her engine. She then came back and blamed us for giving her bad advice. SO, if you are going to do it yourself, be aware that people on here are posting from their experience, and this isn't a professional mechanic's website. Just remember only you are responsible if something happens; don't come back and blame everyone. Good luck!
