When I start my car, and when it idles, I get a steady "ticking sound". It is very evenlly spaced, about 1/2 to 3/4 second between ticks. It mostly does it on idle when the car is sitting, with my foot on the brake, and in drive. It sounds kinda like "chhh, chhh, chhh, etc.". I am thinking I might need to replace my serpintine belt. I am also doing an ATX fluid change for sure. Any suggestions?

Any other ideas? Any easy way to do this on a Zetec?

The only "normal" ticking sound i here is when the engine is off after it is hot. Sometimes I here the current sound while in traffic, sometimes I don't, so I don't think it is normal.

I forgot about the "normal" ticking sound. Mine has had it since I bought it. I was assuming you heard a sound other than the regular one

Id say pull the top cover off the timing belt and see if it goes away. If it does your timing belt is prety streched out.

I am thinking it could be dirty fuel injectors. I had a simmilar type problem on my '99 SE. Sounded almost like I had sucked a valve. IIRC, it didn't get any louder as I gave it moe gas. Could be wrong though because it was a while back.

Pured a bottle of the Chevron with Techron injector cleaner, and a tank later the ticking had subsided. There was always a faint ticking sound though. Guess that is the normal tick. Can't be bad I guess because I have 206,000 miles on the car now.

Could be your valves or lifting arms sticking. I had this problem on my 66 mustang and I had to manually replace one of the lifter arms. Chemicals will only cover it up.
