Well on the firewall side of the engine near the exhaust I see a round metal plug in the engine - it fits properly and looks almost like it came from the factory that way.

But in looking at wiring diagrams and other threads it appears to be where the knock sensor would go.

I have the one loose plug that other threads confirm is wiring for the knock sensor. But no knock sensor in the engine, instead just the plug.

Does this make sense? Is it ok to run that way? engine runs fine and I only put premium in it.

Engine is a replacement engine, replacement done by the previous owner.

Thanks

CEL on by any chance? Without the knock sensor, the ECU would automatically go into limp mode and pull the timing, so you're probably not realizing the full power that you engine can make. I suggest you install the missing sesnor, connect it and reset the computer.

No check engine light or codes. The ECM going into default mode and what that would do was something I was wondering about. So I'll look into getting the sensor.

I was starting to think it was the reason for my stuttering at 2,500 rpm as I had done the intake cleaning and new plugs and new fuel filter with no luck.

However finally installed new Red Ford Racing sparkplug wires, cleaned the distribution block and now stuttering is gone and power feels good.

would be interesting if there is more potential power.

Any thoughts or knowledge about why there is a switch in knock sensors in 1999? This creates a dilema for me as I've got a replacement engine that I don't know what month it was built.

knock sensor, 2.5L, To 5/3/99 95-99 $106.09 $0.00 $95.48
Electrical - Powertrain control - knock sensor

knock sensor, 2.5L, From 5/3/99 99-00 $47.36 $0.00 $42.62
Electrical - Powertrain control - knock sensor

differences in prices, this is result from fordpartsonline.com

knock sensor, 2.5L, To 5/3/99 95-99 $106.09 $0.00 $79.57
Electrical - Powertrain control - knock sensor

Possibly a change in the dimensions of it to reduce part number proliferation across the duratech engine line, but that's just speculation.

I'd go to a ford delaer and ask to see each one - then go from there. Maybe the connectors are different too.

going to the Ford dealer sounds like a good plan.

Looks like the cougar has the same issue - I might search a cougar forum.

Ford dealer near me did not have either of the knock sensors. One of the later ones is at another nearby Ford Dealer that i will visit tomorrow morning - he said they couldn't order both, though offered to have the one at the other dealer sent to him.

The fastcougar.com forum had something in the 2.5 forum about thread size changing. Also said Ford had messed up and left a number of 99 and 2000 2.5 engines without knock sensors?

And they both appear to have the same part number - XS2Z-12A699-AA

Very odd.

Changing this - the Ford Parts guy said they had the same number. Looking at the signature lincoln page they have a 98 knock sensor numbered as F6RZ-12A699-AA. Page for 99 only has one listed for the 2.5 liter
