I know there are a lot of threads on this but I couldn't find anything similar. I could search back 1 year instead of 6 months but if I don't get the new exhaust tomorrow I am going to be deaf from driving the car.

I need new exhaust on the 98 I just bought. My local muffler guy who has done work for me in the past wants to remove the 3rd cat and run 2.5" into a round resonator (about 8" diam x 18" long) then split (at the factory location) and run 2.5" into 3" tips. I told him I want it to sound good and NOT like a honda. He assured me he just did the same setup on a cougar and he said it sounds good, like a new 350Z. Anybody have a setup or heard a setup like this, what are your opinions? Is it throaty or buzzy?

I looked at trubendz.com but my guy will do it for $300.00

Thanks

well I think 300 is a lot, but I did 2.5 (got rid of 2nd cat, put a glasspack type resonator and then kept the stock 2.25 pipes to stock mufflers...I think i spent 100 bucks or so...sounded awesome, but the stock mufflers on the SVT aren't the resrtictive part..."if" you want to save money I would just get rid of the cat and stock resonator, but make sure you put a hi-flow something in it's place. There are people that will tell you to do the whole thing, but you won't gain much of anything but gettting rid of the stock mufflers...with the stock res gone (and hi-flow in it's place)it sounds awesome, and it's cheap. It's what I had before I went turbo.

My car already has a aftermarket 2.5" cat back with no resonator and round magnaflow type mufflers and the whole thing is rusting apart so I cant use the stock mufflers. So your saying no cat with a hi-flow res and no mufflers sounds good?

It'll be loud as hell...and raspy to boot.

Either:

Run a high flow cat with resonator and no rear mufflers

or

Run no cat big resonator and rear mufflers

I am currently running #2 and gave no rasp...

Well I imagine it'd be a little louder than what I had, b/c I had stock mufflers, but it should sound pretty close. I think you should be good with that...right now I have 3in glass-pack type resonator, no cats, and no mufflers, and it sounds awesome, but I think the turbo is the best part

or I leave the factory cat and go with the big resonator and no rear mufflers? I definately DON'T want it to be raspy.

8" resonator!? that fugger will hang long as hell. Tell him to put in a 5x8 Magnaflow instead. It'll do tha same job without reducing your ground clearance to 2"!

Just so that you are going into this with your eyes open, the 3rd cat is really the main cat. The other two are "pre" cats. Eliminating the main cat is likely to cause problems passing a smog test. Most of the exhaust clean up is accomplished in the main cat.

Just buy a Trubendz exhaust. Best bang for the buck.

FORD CONTOUR SVT DUAL EXHAUST (fits non-SVT with adjustments)
ALUMINIZED STEEL 2.5 INCH WITH MAGNAFLOW MUFFLER AND SS TIPS.
PRICE: $310.00
SHIPPING: $30.00

DO NOT WASTE you money on any POS a local shop builds.
$300 for a crushed bend setup with generic POS muffler is $300 and a day of your time too much!!!

98 Contour LX 2.5 Loaded
Last week I got the exhaust replaced because my flopro mufflers rusted out. I had 2.5 alumminized from the main cat, no resonator then split at the rear suspension to 2" and flopro mufflers. Now I have the same setup with Magnaflow Oval Stainless 4" 9" 14" chamber. From the main cat forward is stock. When I drive it now there is a noticable power difference and from outside there is a nice deep rumble I havent had a bad not yet. From inside the cabin there is almost no sound. I imagine when I gut the pre cats and replace the y pipe The sound will get even better. DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A HONDA
