I have a 96 Contour 4 Cyl 2.0l engine. 251K miles. My wife lovinly refers to her as the beast. Well As of New Years Eve she up and died while on the highway. Engine Simply cut out. All other electric is fine. Turns over but does not even try to catch. No sputter no nothing. Pulled a plug and had spark. Also had Gas. Checked the throttle and not stuck. I had the Ignition coil replaced in October. I measure the resistance of the primary coils and they are within specs. Secondary coils have continuity. I can hear the fuel pump run when I turn the key. Last I checked. Gas + spark + air = fire. I'm stuck. Went looking for the Ignition control module. Either I can't find it(Don't know where it would be located) or It is part of the PCM. Any Ideas. any help would be greatly appreciated

have the timing belt checked out... they usualy last between 80K and 140K some have gone longer though. Pull off the timing belt cover to the left (passenger side) of the engine and inspect the belt.

but in this case you need timing also to make it all work

sounds like you checked out everything logically and it would see that the timing is wrong, as suggested I would check the timing belt and go from there, I would also check the computer for codes as that might give you an idea of what is wrong

you can check the timing belt by removing the cover on the left of the engine

Well give the Gentlemen a cupie doll. Puller of the timing belt cover. Belt is very beat up. Lets not even talk about the lack of tension. After 251k miles, I'd say its time to replace it. Not broken just really streched out. I then pulled of the valve cover to check the position of the cams. Looks like the rear cam jumped 1 maybe 2 teeth. Add the play in and I think we found our problem. Thanks for the help but I need to ask for some more. Last summer I wanted to replace my waterpump as a preventative measure. After 4 days of mucking about I had the valve cover off, starter out to lock flywheel, serpentine belt removed, upper engine brace out, and was trying to losen the lower pully to get the lowest piece of the timing belt cover off. I borke 2 elbows trying to losen that damn thing. Finally gave up and reasembled everything. Any hints to get that lower pully off? My mechanic quoted me 1400 to replace timing belt. Car is barley worth 500.

if you are talking about the crank pully you need to us a puller to get it off

if you are refering to the water pump pully, lossen the bolts before you take the belt off

I can understand the cost for fixing over value, but if you like the car and plan to keep it even longer I would make the repair as there should be alot of life left if you have taken care of the car

Its the cranksharf pully. and there is a big honkin bolt through it. Are you saying that I do not have to remove the bolt?

1400 For a timing belt replace?!?!? thats recockulious... I had to have mine repalced at 102K miles and they did that and my serpentine belt for 700$ and I got a 1 year/10K mile warrenty on the whole job... Find yourself a different mechanic.

You have to use a puller that braces against it to pull outwards as you loosen that bolt.

I jammed the flywheel. That stopped the rotation. But I don't recommend it. I think it is what made timing more difficult later on.

PS: use a BREAKER bar or a pipe so you have leverage.
