Ha, that's funny!
Do you know I actually found a '99 with only 500 miles on it! How can someone own this car and only have driven it 500 miles?

It's got 151,000 (I drove the hell out of it!), needs brakes, is popping out of first gear, needs tires and who knows what else. The service advisor said his experience with Contour's is that around 150K major things start failing..I have replaced the water pump and lots of emissions equipment (mass air flow sensor, etc). Is the transmission getting ready to bite the dust? Thing is I love this car and just paid it off a year ago.
Opinions?
Thanks!
I know where you're coming from, as just two years ago, my car was falling apart mechanically. I was at the point of sell or repair. The car had a little over 110,xxx on it, original everything but the H20 pump and new belts. I went with repair, but went overboard with a new 3.0, Quaife, clutch and flywheel, headers, and whatever other things I could put on it. I've been enjoying the car even more since everything was done (it now has 131,xxx on the odometer), mainly because the car has been paid off for over three years, and it's mechanically sound.
The hardest part of rebuilding/repairing is the immediate cost, since you're putting out several thousands all at once. The simple car payment and a new car are very tempting, but most new cars are now 400/month or more with a decent down payment.
So, 400 x 12 months x 5 years at x% interest is a lot of money, against 2-3 thousand immediately. Since you love the car, if you go for repair, you could possibly get another 2-3 years of driving pleasure, and no car payments. Just make sure you pay off your CC's quickly!

Trust me the money you have spend is ntohing comparied to waht i go though....close to $10,000 in modifications to the motor and drivetrain and suspension 1500 in body work...and about 1000-2000 a year on repairs. 3000 for fixing a car is not that bad, and atleast you know where its been. (unlike buying a used car for 3000) Godd luck with what you decided, but im happy with mine...so much so that im looking for another car as a daily driver...cause i got some more plans for my car. Lupe
3.0 SVT hybrid...all the fixens...Track/Race ready very soon!!!!!! 20,000 + miles

Good points from all...it would be much cheaper to borrow several thousand and repair the car. Not an easy decision either way. Thanks for all the input!

Oh I can't wait to sell my car. I'm itching for the day. Gotta graduate first though.
What's the going price lately? '99 SVT w/ 79,000 miles.
Replacement car? I was thinking a Lightning at first because I wanted something to put the bike in for trackdays, but then I figured just use the g/f's truck. I'm gonna do something dumb like go buy a vette. It'll be a blast.

Trade in $4 - 5K, Private Party $6,500- $7,500. Saw a 2000CSVT one owner in Mercury News for $8,500 with 60K on it. Check the CEG classifieds to get a sense of what the rest of the country is paying and then add $1K to your price.
Just get a GTO, cheaper insurance as it has a back seat!
