Hi guys,

I'm trying to decide whether to keep, sell or trade in my 98 SVT Contour. It's got 151,000 (I drove the hell out of it!), needs brakes, is popping out of first gear, needs tires and who knows what else. The service advisor said his experience with Contour's is that around 150K major things start failing..I have replaced the water pump and lots of emissions equipment (mass air flow sensor, etc). Is the transmission getting ready to bite the dust? Thing is I love this car and just paid it off a year ago.

Opinions?

Thanks!

What he said is about right, you can check kelly blue book if you'd like also:
www.kbb.com

right now im replacing the tranny on mine, but it only has 87xxx on it, but then again its the only thing i've actually had to have worked on.

with my other contour it had 165 on the clock before the engine decided to not work (no oil tends to do that) but no major repairs on that one (96 se atx). Seems I cant get away from contours.

Run away from this car if your willing to accept $1500 on trade or $2,500 in cash.

However, for prolly $3,000 in repairs you can have your braking system completely overhauled and transmission rebuilt along with some fresh rubber on the wheels.

Aside from the engine, nothing else major should fail on the car.

in thinking that instead of getting a new car you can take that money and fix the tour up exactly that way you want:

3L
upgraded brakes
tranny upgrade
turbo

...asking if you should sell your car on that specific car enthusiest forum...you'll probably only get one kind of answer. in my opinion though, if you don't love the contour (can't blame you if you don't) then you might as well sell it, but seeing as how you do love the car, then why not spend some more cash on it and make it an awsome car that you will really love.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on the subject! I have thought of investing some money in it but I have already spent 1,700 this year in repairs and the exterior is in rough condition and would need bodywork and paint. I think I'm at the point of diminishing returns with the car due to the mileage. I've listed it on Craigslist for a bit over bluebook and have had quite a few inquiries so I'm hoping to sell it privately. I know the dealer won't give me anything for it. So, tomorrow I'm going to test drive the Mazda 6 and 3 although I know they aren't going to run like the SVT!

BTW, I'm in San Diego.

Hey Toadster, I see you have the 6, nice pics! Do you love it? I'm trying to find a slightly used 04 6i hatch.
