Unfortunately, I'm not talking about Q from Star Trek!

My HU allows me to create 3 user EQ settings based on the the following criteria:

Low Frequency (50,80,120HZ); Low bandwidth (Q, 1-4); and Low Level (0-6). It also allows me similar adjustment for the mids and highs.

The last one is 'how much bass'. Now I get confused. Is the Low Frequency 'which bass frequency to start at'? As for the Q... I have no idea what that means.

I'm using my deck to power 4 Pioneer 6x8 3-ways. Does anyone know what Q is in relation to my deck?

Thanks for the help everyone.

I have the JVC KDSH77 with the same 3-band quasi-parametric equalizer. Basically, here is what you need to know.

The eq is basically a flexible bass/treble control. Whereas most bass/treble controls are adjustible at a fixed frequency (usually 100Hz for bass and 8 or 10kHz for treble) you get to pick which frequency you want to center your adjustments at. The level adjustment should be self explanatory with an adjustment range of +/- 6 steps i think.

Now to explain "Q". Q is basically a measure of how wide a frequency range your adjustments will impact. The lower the "Q", the wider the frequency range that will be affected. The higher the "Q", the more focused and narrow your adjustments will be.

As for what settings are "right" for your particular application, only your ears can tell you that. Unless you have access to an RTA from Audio Control, Coustic, LinearX, etc., trial and error on your part is the only method you have. Take your time with it and treat it as an opportunity to learn (yes, I said "learn"!) about accoustics and equalization as well as what sounds good and not so good to you.

SoundQ,

Thanks much for the reply. I had a decent idea of what was going on, but the instruction manual didn't really explain the various settings very well.

I realize I'll have to learn a little bit more about the unit, and car audio in general. You helped out by letting me know what I can start playing with on my deck. I've had it for almost a year, but I didn't change too many of the presets or start playing around with it til the other day, when I was doing some problem diagnostics.

Thanks again.
